is very unconvincing from the beginning, especially when we compare the episodes of this series with more “classic” games
. While of course the ambitions here aren’t the same, the games in this anthology are shorter and undoubtedly benefit from lower budgets. As the season progressed, the works were less and less successful, alas
fails to raise the ship again.
You and me and the devil make three
However, it all started well, with a script revolving around America’s first known serial killer: HH Holmes. A very disreputable guy who ran rampant through the 1890s through a rather unique modus operandi. The guy did indeed build a hotel full of trapped rooms where he killed his victims before disposing of the bodies, but we’ll spare you the nasty details. In short, the real “Murder Castle” as it was then nicknamed, which was identically reproduced by a certain Grantham Du’Met in this Tea The devil in me. Obsessed with an American killer, he invites a film crew to his modest home… and it’s clearly not for tea.
So we end up with a small team of five different heroes, each with their own expertise in a field, such as photography or sound recording. Unfortunately, this is where the problems for the player begin, as these characters are not only extremely clichéd, but they are all equally unlikeable, with the possible exception of Erin. As a result, we don’t necessarily want to save them, which is the main goal The devil in me. Worse, some of them are so annoying that you quickly want to kill them on purpose.
Devil May Die
In addition to taking great care of the actors, The devil in me suffers from a real rhythm problem. The adventure takes an extremely long time to start, and you can feel a few soft bellies afterwards, which is still quite a feat for a game that’s not even 10 hours long. And it’s a shame, because the context was really interesting, but underutilized. The staging is also very unconvincing and it’s a shame to see the developers fall back into easy and cheap jump scares. In short, all this means that the atmosphere does not occupy and that you do not feel in it at any time.
However, the developers tried to vary the satisfaction by including some new features, even if the success is still not there. For example, each character here has their own inventory as well as their own item, knowing that sometimes it is possible to transfer an item to another hero. If we used them occasionally, these objects are globally super secondary, useless or counterproductive. The devil in me it also adds a small range of movement to the characters, such as pushing boxes to climb on them, but unfortunately the rigid aspect of the adventure makes this difficult.
You have beautiful bugs, you know?
This is also another big concern The devil in me : his disastrous achievement. Obviously, the game super massive it’s not finished and requires a nice series of patches. Between stiff animations, strawberry lip syncs, missed lighting, syncs that sometimes don’t translate or cut off mid-sentence, unconfirmed QTEs, glitches that make it impossible to restart the game, or even the “uncanny valley” that emanates from some characters, there’s just the awkwardness of choice. . And we’re not even talking about the staging inconsistencies that sometimes happen when a title has trouble moving the story logically due to choices made upstream.
To give you a concrete example and you get to the game pretty quickly (but we’ll put it in a spoiler anyway), with one of the characters we discover that Du’Met is leaving the island where his hotel is located. The person who sees it points it out during dinner to the others, who don’t understand why the host got away from them. However, not five minutes later, one of them launches “Ben tell me what, it’s taking a while for Mr. Du’Met to arrive for his meal, it’s not very polite!” We can even add characters that teleport from one scene to another or have a bit of a lunar exchange…
Like other episodes of the season, The devil in me it can be played with several people locally or online, which can make the adventure a little more interesting. Everyone takes a character and makes the choices they want, some of which have a direct impact on survival, even if the system of relationships between the characters is still very unclear. Besides, the choice-based gameplay and QTEs during action moments are seriously starting to wear thin, and maybe it’s time for the developers to move on to something else. Knowing that a second season is planned, let’s hope they can review their copy at this level.
