End of trip to Laos for the Grand Duke

The visit to Laos by Grand Duke Henri and Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action Franz Fayot, which began on Monday, ended on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Grand Duke and Franz Fayot traveled to Phonhong to visit the Maria Theresa Hospital and the nursing school integrated there. The provincial hospital, which was built with the support of Luxembourg, is today recognized for the quality of health services for the local population, including the most vulnerable. It was inaugurated by the Grand Duchess in 2003.

Tour of the most important cultural sights

In Vang Vieng, the Grand Duke and Minister Franz Fayot visited, in the presence of the Governor of Vientiane Province, Khamphane Sitthidampa, the Academy, a hotel training center with an applied restaurant and six hotel rooms supported by Luxembourg cooperation. Guests from Luxembourg enjoyed a meal prepared by the students.

The last day of the trip, Thursday, was marked by a visit to the most important cultural sights of Laos in Luang Prabang. Thus, the Grand Duke and Franz Fayot visited the Luang Prabang Royal Palace, now turned into a museum, Wat Xieng Thong, a Lao Buddhist temple from 1560, as well as the reception center of the national program of unexploded ordnance (UXO).

It should be noted that Luxembourg has been financially supporting the elimination of UXO in Laos since 1999, with a contribution of approximately 4 million euros, and recently approved additional support of up to 1 million euros for the years 2022-2024. Within the indicative program of cooperation V (2023-2027), expansion of development projects of the tourism and hotel sector in Luang Prabang is also planned.
