UNWTO partners with Morocco to help digitize 10,000 tourism microenterprises and SMEs

The World Tourism Organization is stepping up its efforts to turn micro, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into drivers of tourism transformation.

At a meeting of the organization’s executive council in Marrakech, the United Nations specialized agency for tourism outlined ways to help 10,000 Moroccan microenterprises and SMEs Harness the benefits of digital transformation. The joint action plan developed with the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism was announced at the start of the special thematic session “SMEs and Talent, Vehicles of Tourism Transformation”.

Small businesses are the ‘backbone’ of tourism

The thematic session brought together senior public officials such as Ms Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism of Morocco, Mr Siandou Fofana, Minister of Tourism of Côte d’Ivoire and Ms Özgül Özkan Yavuz, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkey.During the round table, they accompanied the Human capital development and small business empowerment, private sector leaders from Radisson Hotel Group, Mastercard, Spanish tourism promotion agency Turespaña, Eloha, Livali Europe, Pikala, Hosco and Les Roches Global. Tourism officials representing the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering, the Mediterranean Tourism Foundation, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority and the International Labor Organization also provided insights.

UNWTO Digital Future Program

This commitment to supporting microenterprises and SMEs in Morocco is the first pilot project launched in Africa by the UNWTO Digital Futures Programme.In Morocco, small businesses account for about 98% of all tourism businesses, and the United Nations World Tourism Organization has identified the country as a Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center. Altogether, the Digital Future Initiative is expected to reach 2 million SMEs around the world, helping them achieve digital transformation, including through customized training and mentoring with key technology partners.

Also in Marrakech, the United Nations World Tourism Organization announced plans to launch a national start-up competition “Invest in Morocco’s tourism development” in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, while advancing the establishment of an enhanced innovation framework to support technology companies in the country.
